Sefer Yetzirah and Astrology

Sefer Yetzirah explicitly links Hebrew letters with cosmic structures. It divides the twenty-two letters into three mothers, seven doubles and twelve simple letters; the seven are associated with traditional planets and days, while the twelve are associated with zodiacal constellations and months.

What is Sefer Yetzirah?

Sefer Yetzirah means “Book of Formation” or “Book of Creation.” It is one of the earliest surviving Jewish esoteric texts. It describes creation through thirty-two paths: ten sefirot and twenty-two Hebrew letters.

Its date is not settled

Traditional Jewish attribution connects the work with Abraham. Modern scholarship does not treat that attribution as historical fact. Proposed dates vary, with recent introductions commonly placing the text somewhere in late antiquity while acknowledging later recensional development.

The three mother letters

Aleph, Mem and Shin form the threefold structure. The text uses them to describe balancing polarities and the elemental pattern of air, water and fire.

The seven double letters

Bet, Gimel, Dalet, Kaf, Peh, Resh and Tav form the sevenfold group. In the text they are associated with seven traditional celestial bodies, seven days and seven human gates. Exact letter-to-planet order can vary by recension and later commentary.

What the text does not give you

It does not provide a modern Western natal-chart manual with Ascendant interpretations, Placidus houses, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto or a fifteen-chapter personality reading. Those belong to later astrology. It also does not state the modern formula “South Node equals past-life baggage, North Node equals Tikkun” in the form used by contemporary Kabbalistic astrologers.

Why this distinction helps Ava Lux

It lets the chart use the ancient correspondence without pretending the entire modern reading was written in antiquity. The textual layer can remain strong precisely because the modern layer is named honestly.
