72 Names guide

How Are the 72 Names of God Formed?

Three verses · seventy-two letters each · one reversed line · seventy-two Hebrew triplets.

The classical derivation uses Exodus 14:19–21, three consecutive Hebrew verses of seventy-two letters each. The second line is arranged in reverse, so each column contains one letter from verse 19, one from verse 20 in reverse order and one from verse 21.

Step 1: remove spaces from the Hebrew verses

The method works on the Hebrew consonantal letters of the three verses. Each verse contributes seventy-two letters.

Step 2: write the first verse in one direction

Verse 19 forms the first row. Hebrew is ordinarily read right to left.

Step 3: reverse the second verse

Verse 20 is laid out in the opposite direction. This creates a boustrophedon-like structure: one line runs one way, the next runs back.

Step 4: place the third verse in the original direction

Verse 21 is arranged like the first. The three rows now contain 216 letters in total.

Step 5: read vertical triplets

The first letter of verse 19, the last letter of verse 20 and the first letter of verse 21 form the first triplet. The pattern continues across all seventy-two positions.

What this proves — and what it does not. The derivation explains the letter structure. It does not by itself establish every modern keyword or promised effect attached to the individual triplets.

Why the crossing-of-the-sea context matters

The three verses stand at a threshold in the Exodus narrative: the camp is separated from Egypt and the sea is about to open. Later Kabbalistic interpretation naturally reads the name-complex through this context of passage and deliverance.

How this enters an Ava Lux chart

Ava Lux does not print all seventy-two triplets as decoration. One triad can be selected as a symbolic focus inside the reading, with the selection method kept separate from the biblical derivation itself.

Sources and textual boundary

Ava Lux editorial rule: source texts, later Kabbalistic interpretation, modern astrology and the Ava Lux reading method are not treated as if they were the same layer. Where traditions disagree or textual versions vary, the page says so.
