The “72 Names” are seventy-two three-letter Hebrew combinations derived from Exodus 14:19–21 in a Kabbalistic tradition. Each of the three verses contains seventy-two Hebrew letters; arranging the middle verse in reverse direction yields seventy-two vertical triplets.
They are letter triplets, not names like personal names
The phrase “72 Names of God” can be misleading in English. The system consists of seventy-two Hebrew triads. Later Kabbalistic traditions treat them as a sacred name-complex and attach meditative or spiritual meanings to individual combinations.
The biblical location
The three source verses are Exodus 14:19, 14:20 and 14:21, immediately before the crossing of the sea. That narrative context has strongly shaped later interpretations of the name as connected with passage, protection, liberation or transformation.
The derivation is structural
The first verse is written in its normal direction, the second is reversed, and the third returns to the first direction. Reading one letter from each line forms the triplets. The whole construction uses 216 letters: 72 × 3.
Traditional and modern meanings are not identical
Later Kabbalistic and popular systems assign specific qualities to each triad. Those interpretations are not all found in the biblical verses themselves, and different schools can label the combinations differently.
